Vancouver and the island
We arrived in Vancouver and wow! We were so impressed. A compact city, surrounding by water, parks, beautiful gardens, bike lanes and quaint shopping districts. Aviva and roger were amazing hosts who showed us the city by foot - walking along the beach and the tip of Stanley park. Saturday night we attended the benefit concert at the Jewish community centre in honor of the late Danielle Horowitz, Merle and Ricky's late sister in law. Over 350 people gathered to pay tribute to this amazing person who touched so many lives. Wonderful music, a havdalah service, dance party, raffle and silent auction raised about $40000 towards an educational fund for disadvantaged youth. The next day we visited with Sam and Tanyss bugis, Rachel and josh - whom we hadn't seen for 25 years! Great to see them again. In the afternoon, derek and nili joined us, together with roger and aviva as we took the little pickle boat over to Granville island to walk around to the wonderful markets and shops. We walked miles along false creek thru various neighbourhoods - just beautiful. Aviva cooked up a delicious dinner that evening as we looked over the marina just outside their doors.Monday morning we flew over to Nanaimo, where Karen and Harry picked us up. The flight was just 20 minutes from Vancouver! The island is just lush with trees, green vegetation and snow peaked mountains. We drove down to Victoria. After just a half
hour wait at the famous food cart " red fish blue fish" we ate a delicious tuna tacone. We visited the impressive empress hotel, a classic Canadian railroad hotel, parliament buildings and shopping district. Back on the road, we passed through chamainous, a tiny town famous for huge murals painted on the side of buildings explaining its history from the past few hundred years. We drove back to their home in Parksville and had a tour of their beautiful home set one street back from the ocean. Harry cooked up his signature salmon dinner that evening. Tuesday we headed out to little qualicum falls - a stunning winding path leading us to magnificent falls in a forest of moss covered trees and ferns. The water was raging cutting through the steep canyons. Wow!On to cathedral grove - Douglas firs hundreds of feet into the air - and hundreds and hundreds of years old. Awesome to imagine how small we looked next to these marvels of nature. Some trees were so large we could stand in their trunk! Next on to Coombs, a town famous for small shops covered in moss roofs, where goats grazed - yes on the roofs! Very quaint! Back home again for flatbread. Yummy!
