Today was a rewind for Stephen to 1964 with a reunion of his penpal Elaine Christian Kane. At age 12, they were winners of a contest that brought Elaine and her uncle Clem to Montreal from Pitcairn island. Today, Elaine and her husband ray as well as Clem and his wife Lovey picked us up at our Wellington hotel for a city tour including spectacular views from the mt victoria lookout and then a three hour lunch overlooking the bay.
There was much reminiscing by the two penpals and uncle clem who had vivid memories of their week together. There was much detail that they remembered and Stephen had lots of questions about growing up on the island as well a life today. Following lunch everyone continued the conversation at the te papa national museum; probably the best museum we've been to.
The day continued at Elaine and rays home where we viewed the video of last years national geographics 2012 expedition to Pitcairn. Elaine clem and Stephen had met Luis marsden, the society's chief explorer who had completed the first expedition to the island in the1960s with the deep water help of Clem. Continuing on into the evening, we went through the photography and press clippings book that Elaine was given by cfcf television upon her departure from montreal . It was difficult to see the reunion day come to a close; after 50 years there was a promise to continue where today had begun. It was an amazing day to be able to go back 50 years as if it was yesterday.
